I want to tell you about this amazing ride I am doing in June, challenging myself to ride the 60 miles from Auschwitz-Birkenau to the JCC Krakow as part of the 2023 Ride For The Living. I’m participating in this important journey not only to remember the Holocaust and its victims, but also to celebrate the miraculous rebirth of Jewish life in Poland and to assist with relief efforts for the 150,000 Ukrainians who have moved to Krakow since the war broke out in February 2022.
Along with other participants from around the world, I will cycle away from the horrific past and toward a brighter future to show the world that, despite our history, the Jewish people continue to thrive and move forward. Money raised during Ride For The Living will provide necessary support to the Jewish Community Center of Krakow, which serves as the focal point of the revival of local Jewish life with over 850 Jewish members, including a Senior Club with 50+ Holocaust survivors, a Hillel with almost 70 members, and the FRAJDA Early Childhood Center and preschool. Additionally, money raised this year will also allow JCC Krakow to continue providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainian Refugees. Since the war began, JCC Krakow has provided food, housing, supplies, and much more to over 180,000 Ukrainian refugees.
I am doing the ride with my old friend and colleague Rabbi Greg Alexander from Cape Town. We would love to surpass our goal to help support the mission of Krakow’s amazing JCC and its dedicated staff and volunteers. If you would like to contribute to our campaign, please visit Riding Rabbis Return home page here.
JCC Krakow has been changing the lives of Jewish Krakowians for over 14 years, and with your support, they can continue their valuable work. My personal connection to this ride is the close connection I had to an amazing, remarkable woman called Irene Ilona Rosenschein, who survived the horrors of Auschwitz with her three sisters and whose 5th yahrzeit is coming up this month – may her memory always be a blessing!
Thanks to those of you who have already supported us.
