Time to Show Up and Listen

Time to Show Up and Listen

The last few months have been a troubling time on so many levels, from pandemics to protests. The Jewish community is no stranger to persecution, but now is our time to Show Up and Listen.

Bonai Shalom’s newly formed Response to Racism Committee is hosting a one-hour Zoom program, on Sunday, June 28 at 4:00 pm featuring four speakers describing some of their personal experiences with racism as well as suggestions for actions we can take. You will hear from the following speakers with time for questions and answers at the end of the program. The Response to Racism Committee (a subcommittee of the Social Action Committee) met for the first time last week with Rabbi Marc Soloway to take action in response to the recent events surrounding the inhumane treatment and subsequent murder of George Floyd, an African-American, by police in Minneapolis.

On Kabbalat Shabbat, June 19th, Rabbi Marc Soloway recognized Juneteenth, the official end of slavery in Texas two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was decreed by President Lincoln. Joining him during the service was incoming CBS Executive Director, Stacey Aviva Flint, who shared some of her personal experience as a black Jewish woman, and Yocheved Landsman, CBS member, who read names, prior to the recitation of the Mourners’ Kaddish, of recent African-Americans killed by police.
