Can you believe it? One of my friends — a 70-year-old Jewish grandma from Boulder — enjoys hunting and owns two guns. While some may be surprised, many Jewish individuals do own firearms for self-protection. Concerned about safety, my friend wants to ensure her beloved grandchild will never have access to her guns. That’s why she plans to attend the Rotary Gun Safe Giveaway to receive a free gun safe for her home and another for her car.
The Gun Safe Giveaway will take place on Saturday, October 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the west parking lot of Boulder Community Health Foothills Hospital located at 4747 Arapahoe Ave. This community event will put hundreds of home safes, car safes, and cable locks directly into the hands of gun owners—free of charge. Registration is not required—just show up. Distribution is first-come, first-served while supplies last, with a limit of two items per household. Volunteers will help set up the biometric features on the safes so people will walk away ready to use them. No weapons are allowed at the event.
Firearm-related injuries are one of the leading causes of death for young people in Colorado.
Research shows that safe storage can prevent accidental gun deaths, domestic violence fatalities, and suicides.
The numbers tell a powerful story. 1 in 3 Coloradans personally own at least one firearm. In Colorado, 45% of households have a firearm and 38% of households with firearms have children living in them. Most children, who die of gunshot wounds, are accidentally killed at home with a gun owned by a parent. In 92% of those childhood deaths, the guns were loaded and unlocked.
A recent study by the CO School of Public Health found that one-third of CO teens said they could lay their hands on a loaded weapon. While 53% of these teens say they could access the firearm within their own home, others say they could get a loaded gun from an extended family member, from a friend, or through purchase or theft.
The Boulder Rotary Club urges firearm owners to take advantage of this opportunity to keep their families and communities safe. For more information, visit www.boulderrotary.org.
