The Boulder JCC, in partnership with local Jewish organizations, will host a community commemoration on Sunday, October 5, marking the second anniversary of the tragic events of October 7, 2023, in Israel.
The commemoration aims to create a sanctuary for our community to find comfort, strength, and connection in shared sorrow. The event will provide opportunities for both personal reflection and collective mourning as the community gathers to remember the lives lost on that devastating day.
On October 7, 2023, a day of unspeakable tragedy unfolded in Israel, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and our people. The commemoration will specifically focus on honoring the memory of those who were killed and the hostages taken that day, while acknowledging but not centering on subsequent events.
The event is presented through a collaborative effort between the Boulder JCC, Israeli-American Council (IAC), and Haver: Boulder’s Council of Rabbis & Cantors, demonstrating the unified response of Boulder’s Jewish community organizations.
The program offers multiple ways for attendees to process grief and connect:
Connection and Reflection (4-5 pm) The afternoon will begin with an hour dedicated to an informal gathering, allowing community members to connect and start the process of collective reflection.
Community Options (5-6 pm) Participants can choose from several meaningful activities:
- Communal singing to unite voices in shared experience
- Viewing of short films documenting the events of October 7
- Art therapy sessions facilitated by the Jewish Studio Project provide a creative outlet for processing grief
Community Remembrance Ceremony (6:00-6:30 pm) The program will conclude with a formal ceremony of remembrance, bringing the entire community together in a unified act of memorial.
While the event centers on mourning and remembrance, it also aims to strengthen community bonds. Through the commemoration, we seek to affirm the Boulder Jewish community’s connection to Israel while providing a supportive environment for collective healing.
The event is free and open to the community. By creating this dedicated space for remembrance, the Boulder JCC and its partners are offering their community an opportunity to mark this significant anniversary together, finding strength through unity during a time of continued grief and reflection.
