Letter: Zohran Mamdani – Just Woke?

It seems to me that Zohran Mamdani is best characterized as a Woke person who has adopted the Woke view of the world in which everyone is designated as an “oppressor” or a victim of “oppression” and then judged in accordance with the designation: oppressors are always judged to be wrong and and victims of oppression are always judged to be right. (“Column: Dragging American Jews Through the Mud in New York Mayoral Race” Boulder Jewish News 7/3/2025) Thus, Woke people are antisemitic because they judge Israel on what it is — the nation-state of the Jews — and not on what it is doing — fighting to prevent Hamas from fulfilling its vow to inflict 1,000 October 7’s on Israelis (and non-Israelis who have the temerity to work in Israel or visit Israel) — and doing so by attacking terrorist leaders, munitions sites, and sites where uranium is enriched with the intention of building nuclear weapons.

I was greatly saddened to read an article recently, in which a Jewish lawyer expressed delight at young Jews not being raised to support Israel. The author accused Israel of using excessive force in Gaza.

I certainly hope that readers of the Boulder Jewish News recall that Major John Spencer, head of Urban Warfare Studies in West Point’s Modern Warfare Institute had praised the IDF’s exemplary efforts (and success) in minimizing civilian casualties while fighting to win a decisive victory over Hamas. It’s also important to recall that, in working to ensure that Iran will not be able to build the nuclear weapon with which Iran has been threatening to wipe Israel off the map, Israel was attacking Iranian military leaders and factories while Iran and its proxies were shooting missiles at Israeli cities.

The Woke Folk also need to be reminded that there are still many Islamists who are hoping to replace Western civilization with a worldwide Caliphate to be governed by the Islamists’ strict interpretation of Sharia Law.
