Thursday, April 3, 6:30 – 7:30 pm
$40 (Members $30)
At a time when the Jewish American community was often still seen as “other,” Abraham Lincoln was a unique advocate for Jewish equality and acceptance, placing Jewish Americans in positions of authority even in the face of backlash from members of his cabinet. In this conversation with fellow historian Allen C. Guelzo, Jonathan D. Sarna returns to The New York Historical’s stage on the 10th anniversary of his and co-author Benjamin Shapell’s award-winning book, Lincoln and the Jews: A History, to explore Lincoln’s remarkable relationship with Jewish Americans, and how this impacted his personal and political views.
Jonathan D. Sarna is University Professor and Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University and the author or editor of over thirty books, including Lincoln and the Jews: A History, co-authored with Benjamin Shapell. Allen C. Guelzo (moderator) is a bestselling author, as well as Thomas W. Smith Distinguished Research Scholar and director of the James Madison Program Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship at Princeton University.
