A group of Boulder volunteers supported by local Jewish organizations will be building an Empty Shabbat Table on the Pearl Street Mall to raise awareness for and advocate for the release of the Israeli 134 hostages still in Gaza. The Empty Shabbat Table will be displayed on the 1300 block of the mall on Friday, March 15 from 10:00 AM to 7:09 PM (sunset), weather permitting.
The Empty Shabbat Table display serves as a poignant symbol of solidarity and empathy with the hostages in Gaza. By leaving a place setting empty at the Shabbat table, individuals are visually acknowledging the absence of those who are being held captive and separated from their families and communities.
This act of remembrance and awareness can foster a sense of connection and compassion among those participating in the display. It serves as a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of advocating for peace and justice.
Additionally, the Empty Shabbat Table display can spark conversations and raise awareness about the plight of hostages in Gaza and other conflict zones. It provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the situation, engage in dialogue, and explore ways to support efforts aimed at securing the release of hostages and promoting reconciliation and understanding.
The whole community is encouraged to volunteer and attend. Community members can sign up to supply the place settings for this advocacy event. If you are able, we ask that you sign up to bring at least 4 complete place settings (dinner plate, knife, fork, glass, napkin). We will have volunteers and professional security onsite the entire time. If you sign up, we would need you to bring your place settings to the Mall between 9:00-9:30 AM and return to pick up your place settings between 7:09-7:30 PM.
Volunteers are also needed to help with set up and break down. Please sign up for all volunteer needs here.
