Socrates Cafe Comes to Boulder

Socrates Café are gatherings around the world where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method. The groups model their discussions from the book of the same name by Christopher Phillips.Today, there are over 400 ongoing gatherings around the globe coordinated by hundreds of volunteers who share the common goal of making a more inclusive world. – Wikipedia.

A Socrates Cafe group has been organized in Boulder.  It is a specific format for discussion groups that concentrate on the Socratic Method of discussing philosophy.  Topics are chosen at the beginning of the session, and then discussed by the group. There are no right or wrong answers so Socratants can express their ideas without concern for opposition from other group members.

This basic concept of exchanging ideas fosters an understanding and respect for the “other guy’s” opinions, and one leaves the session with a feeling of either learning the extent of his knowledge or an appreciation that there are generally two sides to every question.

Meetings are held at the Meadows Branch of the Boulder Public Library on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, including Wednesday, January 19th. For additional information, contact Larry Winston at 720-269-4850, or e mail larrywinston11@yahoo.com.

  1. Ugh that's a bummer that it's held in the afternoon. What about people who work, and non-students? Hopefully it'll get so big they need to create another one!
