Boulder Philharmonic Explores Life, Loss, and Resilience in Strauss & Shostakovich

Michael Butterman, Conductor | Heidi Melton, Soprano
Sunday, November 2, 2025 | 4 PM | Macky Auditorium, Boulder, CO

Boulder, CO – This November, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra invites you to an afternoon of music that speaks to the heart. From stories of survival and hope to a transcendent farewell to life, this program is a journey through the human experience, brought to life by conductor Michael Butterman and Metropolitan Opera soprano Heidi Melton.

The concert opens with Malek Jandali’s Phoenix in Exile, a moving tribute to the resilience of Syrian refugees. Jandali’s music blends the rich traditions of the Middle East with Western orchestral colors, capturing the essence of both sorrow and strength, loss and hope. Emotions that feel particularly urgent today.

Next, Heidi Melton performs Strauss’s Four Last Songs, which he wrote in the final year of his life. These songs, which are set to poems by Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff, are filled with a deep serenity and beauty that make you pause and reflect upon the fleeting nature of life.

The evening concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, a stirring testament of survival and defiance composed just after Stalin’s death. Its depth, energy bursts, and coded musical messages remind us of the power of art in confronting oppression and illuminating the human spirit.

Attendees are invited to arrive at 3 PM for a pre-concert performance and displays by community partners Harvest of Hope, Boulder Children’s Chorale, and others in the gallery.
