A Cossack Horse

A Cossack Horse

We who saw Israeli heroes, on Simchat Torah –

Know the secrets of the Cossack horses chosen by Russian soldiers.

First they were rounded up, then driven cross a raging river.

The few horses who got to the other side, were corralled, but not yet saddled.

Only those noble beasts who turned their backs on safety,

And swiveled to return to those drowning creatures whose flailing hooves

Howled on seeing they could not escape on their own.

Our brave ones who acted like Cossack horses on Oct. 7th. Were met by heavenly Torahs,

Torahs begging to dance with the selfless who could have run to freedom.

And instead to save their friends, cast grenades back at their attackers,

Till nothing resembling a body was left on desecrated earth,

Releasing the souls that could finally soar to untethered heights.
