Tools for Understanding Gender Identity: Dr. Susan Trout to Lead Supportive Community Lecture

Our understanding of gender identity is expanding rapidly, bringing meaningful, important, and deeply human conversations to the forefront of our communities. As these concepts evolve, many are looking for clear frameworks to better navigate the discussion. What defines gender identity, and how does it relate to sexual orientation?

To help provide clarity and shared language, the upcoming exchange class is hosting an insightful lecture titled “Tools for Understanding Gender Identity” featuring renowned expert Dr. Susan Trout. On Monday, June 22, from 5:30 – 7 pm at the Boulder JCC, this session offers a welcoming space to learn about the frameworks that shape these vital concepts.

Rather than looking at these topics through a polarized lens, Dr. Trout will focus on current research and insights to bring clarity to the conversation. Attendees will explore the vital distinctions between biological sex characteristics and an individual’s internal gender identity.

Through this educational approach, Dr. Trout will explain why traditional terms like “gender at birth” are often inaccurate or insufficient. She will share up-to-date insights into how individuals naturally develop their gender identity and discuss research on the best ways to support people whose identities differ from traditional societal expectations. The lecture will also clarify how gender identity, which is who a person fundamentally is, differs from sexual orientation, creating a comprehensive foundation for respectful community dialogue.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from one of the region’s leading medical experts. Dr. Trout earned her M.D. from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine before completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She then pursued a specialized fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Rutgers Medical School, where she also served on the faculty for six years. After relocating to Colorado in 2002, she was appointed Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Today, she remains dual board-certified in both OB/GYN and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility
