Honor the Israel-Argentine Hostage Connection at This Sunday’s Walk

I just returned from a visit to Buenos Aires where I saw a very intense exhibit by an Israeli artist that drew explicit parallels between the “missing” in Argentina and the 100 hostages still remaining in Gaza. In a large room in the main Buenos Aires synagogue, the artist displayed a table set for the hostages, and on the walls surrounding the rooms were photos and paintings of Argentinian families holding up signs displaying pictures of their loved ones who went “missing” between 1976-1983. According to the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), anywhere from 15,000-30,000 were killed by the regime. Although Jews represented only about 1% of the population at the time, nearly 12% of the missing are Jewish. Every Thursday in Buenos Aires, mothers and grandmothers still gather in the Plaza de Mayor and walk to call attention to their family members’ plight. These mothers have been doing this since 1977 — more than 47 years.

The work of Israeli artists Yigal Ozeri and Matias Roth were on display at the synagogue in Buenos Aires. This painting depicts Argentinians, but is an all too familiar a sight in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem right now.

We cannot still be walking for the hostages in Gaza 50 years from now. Please — join us in downtown Boulder calling out for their release.

Our walk this week is dedicated to the ten Israelis with connections to Argentina who are still held in Gaza.

Top row, left to right:
The Cunio brothers, David and Ariel.
The Horn brothers, Yair and Eitan.

Middle row:
Ronen Engel, may his memory be a blessing.
Lior Rudaeff, may his memory be a blessing.

Bottom row, left to right:
The Bibas family: Shiri, Yarden, Ariel and Kfir.

Except for Lior Rudaeff, all of the hostages in this post were kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz.

Our walk is family friendly and pet-friendly — everyone is welcome. We need the leaders of the Jewish community to walk with us. We need as many members of the Boulder community at large to walk with us — Jews and nonJews, affiliated and unaffiliated. There are critical days ahead. We continue to hold out hope for a hostage deal, even as Israel now confronts new dangers on its Syrian border.

Please — share our flyer widely. We will be walking every week until they all come home. We want to walk with you by our side. We need each other in these days.

In solidarity,
Rachel

PS: There are 231 active Run For Their Lives groups across the world. Wherever you are, whether visiting friends or family or vacationing, you can join a group and walk with them, or walk on your own and post a video in the main Run For Their Lives Facebook group, in our local FB group, or on your own feeds. The initiative’s goal is to get as much press coverage as possible for the hostages through publicizing these walks.

Our group meets at 1 pm on the corner of Pearl & 8th and walks the length of the Pearl Street Mall and back, stopping at the courthouse for a brief video that the leads of Run For Their Lives include in their weekly recap. The goal is to share the message far and wide (specifically via social media) that the hostages have not been forgotten. This is not a protest; it is a peaceful walk to show solidarity with the hostages and their families, and a plea for their release.

When: Sunday, December 22nd at 1 pm
Meet-up: Corner of Pearl & 8th Street
