D’var Shana – Thoughts About the Year by Cyrus Isaac, Bar Mitzvah

This year I participated in the Adventure B’nai Mitzvah Class. It was a lot of fun and I had all kinds of new experiences. I’d like to tell you a little about my favorite classes and what I learned.

One of my favorite trips was when we went to Moab to join the Adventure Judaism congregation for the Passover retreat. If I were to describe this experience to someone who wanted to go, I would say it was a really good learning experience because we could push our limits and learn about Passover. It was really fun to bond with my classmates. One of my favorite parts was the hike with just the class and the other teens when Rabbi Jamie led us on a night hike up to an arch. We got to lay under the arch in the dark and look at the stars. Overall it was my favorite class because of all the fun things and being in the wilderness.

Another trip I enjoyed was when our class climbed a 10,025-foot peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. This was a fun experience because I got to push my limits with hiking in rough terrain when it was hailing and making sure others could do it. My favorite part of it was when we were all going down the mountain in the hail with my friends because it was the most exciting part of the hike.

Two lessons that I learned from this hike are that we should be prepared and that my classmates and I should look out for each other, and encourage each other. Becoming a bar mitzvah is similar to climbing a mountain in that I should prepare for my Bar Mitzvah by working hard. My classmates and I should support each other both while climbing mountains and preparing for our ceremonies.

The big lesson that I learned through my experience with the Adventure Class is the importance of looking out for the other people in my group. It’s important to make sure that everyone in the group is safe and feels included. It is important to encourage and support each other. If you look out for your community they will look out for you.
