The Real Maestro and the Reel Maestro This Weekend

What did you think of “Maestro?” What did it get right and what did it get wrong? What did it leave out?

Join me and two special guests for a conversation about Bradley Cooper’s controversial biopic, now streaming on Netflix, on Sunday, January 28 at the Boulder JCC.

We will gather at 6 pm for a light Israeli dinner, followed by a screening of “Leonard Bernstein and the Israel Philharmonic,” a new 45-minute documentary about Bernstein’s life-long connection to the Jewish homeland.

After the screening I will be joined by two CU College of Music professors who will share their expert opinions and insights into Bernstein the conductor and composer as we discuss the film with the audience.

Pianist Andrew Cooperstock performs widely as soloist and chamber musician and has appeared throughout six continents and in most of the fifty states, including performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations. With a special interest in piano music of Leonard Bernstein, he made the first recording of Bernstein’s complete piano works, for Bridge Records, a portion of which appears in Deutsche Grammophon’s Bernstein: Complete Works. Renee Gilliland is associate director of orchestras, conductor of the CU Philharmonia Orchestra and instructor of music education at CU. Gilliland has conducted performances with the Boulder Philharmonic, Boulder Concert Band, Playground Ensemble, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and Bang on a Can All-Stars among others.
