A Musical Shabbat: Bonai Welcomes Members

What is Jewish music?

A cursory search reveals that the variety of music used for worship and celebration is as wide as the Diaspora, as old as the First Temple, and is newly minted each Shabbat. It’s created by men, women, children; it’s sung a cappella, blared electronically, or quietly chanted.

Boulder County’s Conservative shul Bonai Shalom will host a Musical Shabbat and Welcome to Bonai dinner for prospective members on Friday, August 23 at 6:00 pm. In keeping with the region’s acoustic traditions, Rabbi Marc Soloway and ensemble join together guitar, mandolin, drum, and voices in praise, creating a dynamic and inclusive ritual that warms the hearts of its participants. (It is Bonai’s custom for the musicians to put down their instruments before the end of Kabbalat Shabbat and finish the service a cappella in respect of tradition.)

Current Bonai members will attend this special event as well, in order to give visiting prospective members a true sense of this unique spiritual community.
