Letters and Tracks: Stories of Resilience at The Arts Hub

The Arts Hub in Lafayette, in partnership with the Boulder Jewish Community Center (JCC), invites the community to an extraordinary evening of remembrance and reflection through Letters and Tracks: Stories of Resilience on April 21, 2025 at 7 PM. This event, taking place in honor of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), combines music, theater, and visual art to explore themes of history, memory, and survival. Through its innovative programming, the event celebrates the enduring human spirit while honoring the legacy of those who resisted oppression during one of history’s darkest periods.

Steve Reich’s Different Trains Performed by the Koa Quartet with Visuals by David Fodel

A highlight of the evening is a performance of Steve Reich’s groundbreaking composition Different Trains, brought to life by the Koa Quartet. This minimalist masterpiece juxtaposes Reich’s childhood train journeys across America with the haunting reality of trains used to transport Holocaust victims to concentration camps. Through its layered string quartet melodies, recordings of train sounds, and spoken testimonies from Holocaust survivors, Different Trains creates a deeply emotional and thought-provoking experience.

Accompanying this performance are live visuals by renowned artist David Fodel. Known for his innovative work in sound design and video art, Fodel’s visuals amplify the emotional resonance of Reich’s music. His imagery weaves together historical footage, abstract forms, and evocative representations of train travel, offering a powerful visual narrative that deepens the audience’s connection to the music’s themes of memory and survival.

Paper Snow: A Stage Reading by Laurie Scoggins

Complementing the musical performance is a staged reading of Laurie Scoggins’ original play Paper Snow. This compelling work tells the true story of Sophie and Hans Scholl, siblings who led the White Rose resistance group in Nazi Germany. Through their courageous distribution of anti-Nazi leaflets, the Scholls risked their lives to stand against tyranny and inspire others to resist. Scoggins’ play captures their bravery and moral conviction, shedding light on a lesser-known but profoundly inspiring chapter of Holocaust history.

A Fusion of Sound, Story, and Imagery

Letters and Tracks is more than just a performance—it is an immersive experience that bridges art and history. By combining Reich’s evocative music with Fodel’s striking visuals and Scoggins’ gripping storytelling, the event offers a multifaceted exploration of resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. It invites audiences to reflect on the past while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Honoring Yom HaShoah

This program aligns with the solemn observance of Yom HaShoah, a day dedicated to remembering the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust and honoring those who resisted oppression. Events like Letters and Tracks ensure that these stories are not only remembered but also serve as lessons for future generations about courage, resistance, and humanity.

Don’t miss this unforgettable evening at The Arts Hub—a profound tribute to history through music, theater, and art.
