As we begin a new school year and enter the fall semester, we are excited to share the news about a significant step in our commitment to sustainability at the Boulder JCC. We are expanding our renewable energy infrastructure by adding 306 kW of solar panels to the roof of our building, complementing our existing 80 kW system (72 kW on our main building and 8 kW at Milk and Honey Farm). We are thrilled that construction is now underway.
This ambitious initiative was made possible through a generous grant from the City of Boulder’s Community, Culture, Resilience, and Safety (CCRS) Tax Grant Program, along with funds that are still on track to be provided through the Federal Government’s Investment Tax Credit for solar projects. In addition, the project is receiving generous support from:
- Xcel Energy’s Solar*Rewards program
- PACE | Partners for a Clean Environment
- Adamah Climate Action Fund
- And, community members like you
We have partnered with Namaste Solar, a local worker-owned cooperative with 20 years of experience in renewable energy, and with TSR Energy, which provided crucial system design guidance to maximize our roof’s solar potential.
This expansion embodies our continuing commitment to sustainability and repairing our world through meaningful environmental action. By generating clean energy, we support a healthier and more decarbonized regional electricity grid. Additionally, the significant monthly savings will free up funds for our community programs and services, enabling us to further fulfill our mission. Upon completion, the solar panels will produce approximately 80% of the JCC’s annual electricity needs, and Milk and Honey Farm will continue to operate as a net-zero facility, with all its power needs met through on-site renewable energy generation.
We invite you to visit the Sustainability at the Boulder JCC page on our website, where you can learn about this exciting project and other sustainable practices we have incorporated into our building and programs. As we watch these new solar panels being installed in the coming months, we are reminded how our community embodies our shared value of environmental responsibility. Together, we are creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.
IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT INSTALLATION: During the installation period (now through November), please be aware that workers will be present on our roof and moving in and out of our building. Additionally, you may notice fencing, ladders, and flags on our roof. Construction sounds and increased activity are to be expected. While this is a major installation, we are committed to minimizing disruptions to our school and community activities. Thank you for your understanding as we enhance the sustainability of our facility. We look forward to seeing you at school pickup, at a program, or just dropping by for a coffee!
As Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, approaches, we wish you and your loved ones a sweet, healthy, and meaningful year ahead.
With Gratitude,
Jonathan Lev, Executive Director
