The Chai Life Group is Boulder’s new group for single older adults (70+) who are looking for Jewish cultural programs and opportunities to meet and socialize with others. It is a community collaboration of Congregation Har HaShem, Congregation Bonai Shalom, Congregation Nevei Kodesh, the Boulder JCC, Boulder JFS, and Kavod on the Road.
Our next program, Irena Sendler: The Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto, is a one-woman show that will be performed at Congregation Har HaShem (3950 Baseline Road) on Thursday, April 13 at 2:00 pm. The presentation is brought to us by Kavod on the Road.
Actress and scholar Judy Winnick will portray Irena Sendler.
As a Polish Catholic social worker during WWII, Irena Sendler risked her life to save others. She was the leader of the children’s section of Zegota, Council for Aid to Jews, and part of the Polish underground. With ingenuity, calmness and courage, she was responsible for rescuing 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. Irena never thought of herself as a hero, and said she simply did what needed to be done, and followed her heart.
Irena was born in 1910 and died in Warsaw in 2008, at the age of 98. During her lifetime she received many awards for her humanitarian work. In addition to being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, Irena was recognized by the state of Israel as one of the “Righteous Among Nations” at Yad Vashem.
