Aish Kodesh is proudly making its way across town. We are in the process of moving from Balsam Avenue in north Boulder to Cherryvale on the east side. While we were anticipating the beauty of the lush vistas, and looking forward to being near the future Boulder JCC, I admit there was some minor apprehension about how it would work living next door to Congregation Bonai Shalom. It’s true that Rabbi Goldfeder and Rabbi Soloway are good friends, and we have quite a few members in common, but I anticipated some tension around our mutual boundaries.
So imagine my surprise when at our first formal meeting, Steve Hill, the incoming president of Bonai, starts off by not only giving us a warm welcome, but letting us know how pleased they are that we are nearby, and how much Bonai looks forward to working together. What menschen! The entire meeting was based on common goals and how we can expand the experience of Yiddishkeit in Boulder within our communities, and at the same time respecting healthy good neighbor boundaries.
While countries, political parties, religious groups, and other associations across the globe are becoming increasingly isolationist and xenophobic in an attempt to protect their own domains, Bonai Shalom has expanded their vision of possibilities, and demonstrated a willingness to open their hearts and their fences to help their new neighbors. I am impressed, moved, and grateful to the Bonai community, and we join them in working together to enhance the experience of Jewish life in Boulder.
Toda Rabah!
