The number of Coloradans who experienced a hate crime or bias-motivated incident in the last five years is significantly higher than official government data indicates, according to a statewide survey commissioned by Hate Free Colorado.

Hate crimes directed at individuals based on their race, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity and disability increased in Colorado, according to the FBI’s 2019 hate crime report.

The number of reported hate crimes in Colorado increased by 16 percent between 2017 and 2018 while the number of reported cases nationwide slightly decreased, according to the FBI’s annual hate crime report released today.

The Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region expressed concern that, for the second year in a row, the FBI’s annual hate crimes report documents an increase in hate crimes nationwide.
