Tu B’Shvat

Join us Thursday, January 13, at 7:30 pm for a virtual Tu B'Shevat seder where we'll talk about Boulder's new climate initiative to create cool corridors throughout our community and explain the importance of urban forests and carbon-rich landscapes as critical to both community well-being and climate action.

The day will be observed with an afternoon program featuring Peter and Beth Ornstein. Their presentation will look at traditional Jewish, Native American, and other texts to learn what they have to say about appreciating the environment.

The focus of this year’s community Tu B’Shevat seder will be Wildfires, Reforestation, and the Climate Crisis. Join us for this virtual event Wednesday evening, January 27, 2021, where we will explore the intersection of Jewish thought, trees, and climate.

The Boulder JCC is hosting a Zero Waste Tu B’Shevat Seder for adults on Sunday, February 9 in partnership with Congregation Bonai Shalom, Congregation Har HaShem, Congregation Nevei Kodesh, Hazon, Moishe House, Tuv Ha'aretz, and Morah Yehudis Fishman: Community Educator.

Trees will trend this Tu BiShvat as Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) drives awareness about the New Year for trees while highlighting its afforestation efforts in Israel.

This year, we celebrated the holiday at Milk and Honey Farm at the J with a new twist, by incorporating the theme of Food Justice into the mystical seder structure.

On January 20th, or 15 Shevat, we’ll be celebrating the new year for trees. Today the holiday is often celebrated as a sort of Jewish “earth day,” connecting the new year for the trees to current environmental issues of our time.

Though Tu B’shevat comes during the heart of winter in North America, the holiday allows us to begin planning for the spring, assessing our environmental commitments for the year, and examining our spiritual place in the natural world.

While many in the Diaspora may still be blanketed under snow or still facing the winter, Israelis observe Tu B'Shvat with festive tree planting celebrations in the newly green hills and valleys.
