The gut-brain axis refers to the physical and chemical connections between your gut and brain. Neurotransmitters and other chemicals produced in your gut also affect our brain. By altering the types of bacteria in your gut, it may be possible to improve your brain health. Hidden in the walls of the digestive system, is believed to be a “second brain”. This “brain in your gut” is revolutionizing medicine’s understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way you think. Research suggests that digestive-system activity may affect thinking skills and memory too and they are discovering how signals from the digestive system affect metabolism, raising or reducing risk for health conditions like type 2 diabetes.
