We live in a small white house
that is very old and needy in
a city that has really bad vibes, but underneath the crime and poverty,
immigrants live a quasi American Dream in rented houses,
shooting off fireworks well into the night.
The rest of us tried to celebrate July fourth
though it was not the same.
We are holding our breath,
perhaps we’ll have some good news by November,
waiting to see what our country
will believe.
While I’m learning not to be
that Ugly American to our neighbors,
they have all brought me closer
to Her, learning the love language
of other cultures
who speak of God with different rituals,
but I know we feel the same.
This country so turn apart
still shines with God’s light.
Though the darkness has cast its spell which has divided us so well,
God’s light is still within us
bringing us hope of a new day
where the sun shines through the shades.
