Dear editor:
Bruce Ticker is correct. (When Trump and Hamas Refuse to Leave the Tough Talk in Vegas Boulder Jewish News February 3, 2025.) Arab leaders created the mess in the Middle East. Instead of helping the Arabs of Palestine prepare for the autonomy offered them by the 1947 UN Partition Plan for Palestine, Arab nations began threatening violence against the Zionists in Palestine and the Mizrachi Jews in the Moslem countries of the MIddle East and North Africa, even before the plan was approved by the General Assembly. Renascent Israel absorbed and uplifted 800,000 Mizrachim who were driven from their homes (while rehabilitating Holocaust survivors, recovering from damages inflicted by the Arab armies, and dealing with terrorist attacks from areas controlled by Jordan and Egypt until 1967). The descendants of the Mizrachim comprise the majority of Israel’s current Jewish population. Every position in Israel’s governance, except Prime Minister, has been held, at one time or another, by someone with roots in the Mizrachi communities.
Arab-initiated violence also saw the creation of a second group of refugees — Arabs whose families had moved to Palestine after Zionist activity had improved the area’s living conditions. Between 400,000 and 700,000 of them left Palestine when living conditions deteriorated as the upper class citizens moved to their summer homes when war preparations got under way.
Despite having vast landholdings (and some having oil riches), Arab states refused to grant citizenship to Arabs who’d left Palestine, preferring to place them under UNRWA aegis. Although no more than 30,000 of the Arabs who fled Palestine in the 1940’s are still alive, UNRWA now has 6,000,000 Palestine refugees on its rolls. At the request of Arab leaders, UNRWA has not resettled a single refugee or found work for any of them. Thus, UNRWA is abetting Israel’s enemies in a plan to convert the nation-state of the Jews into a Muslim-majority country where no Jew will be safe (UNRWA “camps” have become cities which are hotbeds for terrorist activities and Palestinians have long been honored and rewarded for killing Jews). .

The recent “Pro-Palestinian” demonstrations in Arab countries are unlikely to have much effect on Arab leaders’ refusal to take in large numbers of Palestinians. The leaders have long histories of autocratic rule with little, if any, acknowledgement of their people’s complaints and the Palestinians have a long history of biting the hand that feeds them.

Talk of a Palestinian state is also somewhat of a red herring. As Prime Minister Netanyahu pointed out just after October 7, 2023, Hamas had full control of Gaza (all Israeli security personnel and civilian residents had been evacuated before Hamas came to power) but Hamas did not make any attempt to build the infrastructure needed by a viable state. Instead, Hamas spent $1,000,000,000 building an extensive network of terror tunnels, embedding it so deeply within the Gazan populace that Hamas insured that Israel’s exemplary efforts to avoid hurting civilians would be guaranteed to be less than 100% effective. Although much of our media refuses to admit it, it should be clear to everyone that the Palestinian “cause” is more an effort to destroy the world’s only Jewish state than to build a state in which the Palestinians could become productive citizens. To close on a positive note, I will point out that President Trump’s plan has caused some Arab nations to begin looking at alternative plans which, significantly, insist that Hamas must be denied any role in governing Gaza.
