Exciting Purim Events at the Boulder JCC

Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar — which is a month of happiness and joy. The holiday commemorates the day Esther, Queen of Persia, saved the Jewish people from execution by Haman, the advisor to the Persian king. Esther bravely exposed her previously hidden Jewish heritage to her husband the king and asked him to save her people, which he did. The holiday is celebrated by the reading of the Megillah, a handwritten scroll of the story, exchanging gifts of food, a festival meal, and dressing up in costumes.

This year Purim is celebrated the evening of Saturday, March 23, 2024 and Sunday, March 24, 2024.  The Boulder JCC is offering different opportunities for all ages to come together to celebrate Purim leading up to the holiday. Check out the list below.

1. Teen Purim Hamantaschen Bake-Off

Teen bakers and pastry enthusiasts get a chance to roll up your sleeves and join us on Thursday, March 14 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm for a Hamantaschen Bake-Off. Feel free to bring any unique filling options from home, gluten-free almond-based dough will be provided per request. A panel of judges and students will critique your work based on creativity, flavor, and kitchen etiquette. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

2. Purim Celebration

Take part in the family Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 12 from 2 – 4 pm. Geared to families with children 2-10 years old, the celebration will include the telling of the story with a Purim spiel, costume parade, exciting entertainment, and large inflatables.  Hamentashen will be available for purchase. There will also be a pre-party sensory-friendly hour from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. The activities and environment will be designed for families with children who have sensory challenges.

3. A Purim Art Workshop: Discovering Our True Selves Through Mask-Making

The Purim story is a saga of masked identities, secrets, hidden plots, and underlying truths. What appears one way on the surface turns out to be something different than expected. Explore what we chose to reveal and what wants to be concealed through mask-making with Rabbi Eva-Sax Boulder on Tuesday, March 19. No experience is needed, most materials will be provided.

4. Women & Men of the J Purim Party

All are welcome to come and celebrate Purim with the Women and Men of the J on Thursday, March 21. Enjoy food, drinks, and music while schmoozing with old and new friends. If you love to bake, we invite you to bring your “baked with love” Hamentashen to share. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.

All Boulder JCC programs are open to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation. You do not need to be Jewish to participate.
