According to the World Health Organization, “Social isolation and loneliness are important, but often neglected, social determinants of health across all ages, including for older people.”
In the last year several community members raised concerns about extra support needed for senior adults who are single. “The goal of the Chai Life Group is to gather single Jewish older adults together for fun, social, and intellectually stimulating programs,” said Lisa Webber, Director of Communications and Membership Engagement at Congregation Har HaShem. “It just made sense for it to be a community wide effort to reach the greatest number of people.”
Launched last year, the Chai Life Group ran a program once a month at a different location each time, geared to single folks over the age of 65+. Programs included a poetry reading, musical performance and art gallery opening. The participation was strong, but we wanted to keep the momentum high between each program.
“As we enter the new Jewish year, our organizations are going to try something a little different”, said Nancy Lipsey, of the Boulder JCC. “We are going to offer 5 opportunities to gather over the next 7 weeks to keep everyone connected and excited to be together.”
