Holler the Challah at the 2023 Great Big Challah Bake!

Baking ChallahTogether Builds Community!

The Boulder JCC’s Annual Great Big Challah Bake, presented by the Women of the J, will be held on Thursday, November 16 from 7 pm – 8:30 pm at the Boulder JCC. This program is open to experienced and novice bakers and everyone is welcome (ages 12 and up) to join this program for a hands-on experience to create a challah.

Challah is a braided bread, which is made with eggs. It is often eaten on the Jewish Sabbath and holidays. These loaves of bread are typically pale yellow in color due to the eggs are that used and their rich flavor makes people come back to challah recipes continually.

The Great Big Challah Bake Co-Chairs Debbie Garelick and Eti Young will assist us in preparing and braiding challah dough to bake at home just in time for Shabbat. Participants will create the bread from scratch while connecting with others and building community. The Boulder JCC will provide all the ingredients and support to help you create your challah.

This year’s program will start at 7 pm to better accommodate participants’ dinner plans before arriving at the Boulder JCC. The doors will open at 6:30 pm and there will be a desserts-only break for those waiting for their dough to rise.

This program is gluten-free friendly, as we are offering a gluten-free dough option with instruction. The gluten-free recipe, developed by Mitten Lowe, is a gluten-free, dairy-free, oat challah recipe which has become a Great Big Challah Bake fan favorite.

We are again partnering with Moe’s Broadway Bagels to donate loaves of challah to people in our community experiencing food insecurity. When participants register they will have the option to add an extra challah for donation.

We are looking for volunteers to help with Challah Bake! If you are interested in volunteering to be a table captain or assisting with preparations for the Challah Bake, please email Shari Blake Schnee at shari@boulderjcc.org if you would like to volunteer.

Thank you to our 2023 Great Big Challah Bake Partners:  Moe’s Broadway Bagels and Robert and Debbie Garelick.
