Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” – Unveiling the Inspirational Journey from Summer Camp to Historic Activism

Join us at the Boulder JCC for an unforgettable cinematic experience as we kick off the ReelAbilities Film Festival with the screening of “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.” This heartwarming documentary takes you on a captivating journey that traces the profound connection between a Catskills summer camp and the burgeoning disability rights movement that reshaped America in the 1970s. Whether you’re attending in person or virtually, this is a cinematic event you won’t want to miss.

The documentary delves into the remarkable transformation ignited by Camp Jened, a modest camp nestled in the picturesque Catskills. This camp, originally labeled as “for the handicapped” (a term now obsolete and insensitive), became a pivotal site where the boundaries of possibility were shattered. In an era when teenagers with disabilities faced a future marred by isolation, prejudice, and institutionalization, Camp Jened emerged as a beacon of hope and liberation.

Crip Camp” is a poignant testament to the power of camaraderie and shared experiences. It chronicles the journey of a group of Camp Jened alumni who, fueled by the spirit of the camp, emerged as trailblazers in the radical disability rights movement. Their convictions led them to embrace disruptive tactics, civil disobedience, and unyielding political engagement as tools to reshape the future for millions of individuals facing similar challenges.

To mark the launch of the ReelAbilities Film Festival, we invite you to join us on Sunday, September 10 for a pre-program launch party, where you can engage in spirited conversations, savor light fare and refreshments, and immerse yourself in the anticipation of the cinematic journey that awaits. Following the screening, a virtual talkback session with Director James Lebrech will provide an invaluable opportunity to gain insights into the making of this transformative documentary.

For those unable to attend in person, fear not – “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” can be experienced through our livestream option. To secure your access, simply register here.
