ChaiFlicks Acquires Rights To All 3 Seasons Of Global Phenomenon “Shtisel”

Jewish Streamer Also Acquires yes Studios’ Award-Winning Series “Fire Dance

Shtisel” Debuted December 14 on ChaiFlicks

Los Angeles (December 11, 2023)—ChaiFlicks, the world’s leading streaming platform for Jewish storytelling, has acquired the rights to all three seasons of yes Studios’ global phenomenon “Shtisel” and the studio’s award-winning drama series “Fire Dance,” it was announced today by ChaiFlicks co-founders Neil Friedman and Bill Weiner.

ChaiFlicks started streaming season one of “Shtisel” in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, December 14. “Fire Dance,” which will be available in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and Canada, will make its debut on ChaiFlicks in early 2024.

Shtisel,” which has won numerous awards including Best Drama Series from the Israeli Academy TV Awards, follows the lives of the extended Shtisel family, a warm, closely-knit ultra-Orthodox family in Jerusalem. Created by Ori Elon and Yehonatan Indursky and produced by Abot Hameiri Barkai and yesTV, “Shtisel” provides unique insight into the daily lives and loves propelling the “Haredi” society.

Fire Dance” is the first television series from acclaimed Israeli filmmaker Rama Burshtein-Shai (“The Wedding Plan,” “Fill The Void“) – a coming-of-age story of a young, troubled woman, in a tight knit ultra-orthodox religious sect. “Fire Dance” premiered at the prestigious Series Mania Festival in 2022, where lead actor Yehuda Levy was named Best Actor in a Drama Series.

ChaiFlicks, which launched in August 2020, is the world’s largest streaming platform dedicated to Jewish content. ChaiFlicks has over 2,500 hours of acclaimed films, television series, documentaries, and short films. Available on every major streaming device, ChaiFlicks is now streaming in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring these two award-winning, groundbreaking series from yes Studios to our subscribers,” says ChaiFlicks’ Friedman and Weiner. “Ori Elon, Yehonatan Indursky and the team at yes assembled a phenomenal ensemble cast and created a global phenomenon with ‘Shtisel’ and ‘Fire Dance’ and Rama Burshtein-Shai’s first foray into television was one of the most anticipated Israeli dramas of the last decade. Both series will join the thousands of hours of acclaimed films, TV series and documentaries that we have assembled at ChaiFlicks.”

Sharon Levi, Managing Director of yes Studios added, “‘Shtisel’ has become an iconic series, beautifully portraying a unique way of life through engaging characters and involving storylines. We are so pleased that it has found a perfect new home, alongside the incredible and cinematic series “Fire Dance,” and that both titles will be made available to the growing ChaiFlicks subscriber base around the world.”

Described by The New York Times as “Binge-worthy TV,” “Shtisel” follows the lives of Shulem Shtisel (Dov Glickman), the Shtisel family patriarch and a rabbi at the local cheder — the religious study room — and the other members of his family. “Shtisel” is set in a strictly Jewish Orthodox, Internet-free neighborhood. The community follows strict Haredi customs, and violating the norms often causes chaos within the family. However, the characters who are more open to a secular lifestyle reflect the diversity of Jerusalem’s many neighborhoods, from Geula’s moderation to the neighboring Mea She’arim quarter, the adjacent community known for even harsher religious fundamentalism.

Critics across the globe have lauded “Shtisel’s” ensemble cast, led by Michael Aloni, Shira Haas, Ayelet Zurer, Dov Glickman, Neta Riskin, Sasson Gabbai, Zohar Strauss and others. The first season of the series was nominated in 12 categories at the Israeli Academy TV Awards in 2013, including two nominations apiece for best actor and actress in a drama series – Glickman and Aloni, as well as for Zurer and Riskin.

Shtisel” won 11 Israeli Academy TV Awards that year, including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Dov Glickman), Drama Director (Alon Singman), Drama Screenplay (Uri Alon and Jonathan Indursky), Design Costumes, Make-Up, Photography, Original Music (Avi Belleli), Soundtrack, Artistic Management, and Editing. At the Israeli Television Academy Awards ceremony in 2015, the second season won directing awards for the drama series (Alon Singman), acting awards in the actor and actress category (Dov Glickman in his second win with the series, and Neta Riskin), original music, art design, and costumes.

Burshtein-Shai’s “Fire Dance” produced by Kuma Studios and yes TV, is a coming-of-age story of a young, troubled woman, in a tight knit ultra-orthodox religious sect. The series follows Feigi, 18, who grew up in a broken home, without a father figure. Feigl (played by Mia Iwryn) attaches her future happiness to Nathan (Yehuda Levy), the 35-year-old married son of the leader of the ultra-orthodox community in which they both live.

Feigi’s feelings and her longing for a relationship with Nathan can never materialize. It is this delicate tension, between passion and fulfillment, set on the backdrop of a conservative, devout community – in which “Fire Dance” exists. The series also stars Noah Koler, who plays Feigie’s temperamental mom, Rayzee. Koler also stars in Israeli supermarket comedy “Checkout,” which is also available on ChaiFlicks.

Also in December, ChaiFlicks is launching a specially themed “Orthodox Life” programming week. Starting December 16, ChaiFlicks will premiere two new titles, three-episode series “Match Made in Heaven” and documentary “Divorce Denied.” Also making its ChaiFlicks debut that week is critically acclaimed film, “A Life Apart—Hasidism in America,” narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker and Leonard Nimoy.
