Each summer, thousands of young adults decide to work at summer camps like Cherryvale Day Camp at the Boulder JCC. Working as a camp counselor, you develop many practical skills that will set you on a course for a meaningful career in the future.
Below are a few of the many skills you can gain as a camp counselor. Ready to apply? Click here.
Leadership
Leadership is a big component of a counselor’s role. Counselors learn how to build and strengthen relationships and serve as role models. Strong listening skills and empathy are developed in this role and are key elements of a good leader. Counselors care for the safety and well-being of each camper, and must be trustworthy, reliable, and mature. But don’t forget, it’s summer camp! All this is done with a sense of fun and a smile!
Project Management and Communication
Counselors are responsible for meeting the unique needs of each individual camper. This means counselors require a strong attention to detail while maintaining a fun environment. Counselors are also responsible for planning activities for their group each week. To successfully implement their programs, counselors must be sure to have organized all the materials they need and have communicated their plan with other staff members. Camp is by no means a one-person-show. As a counselor, you will develop excellent communication skills while working with staff members, the camp directors, families, and campers.
Creativity and Adaptability
Although camp activities are mostly pre-planned, adapting to periodic, unexpected changes is another key component of a counselor’s role. As a counselor, you need to be ready with games, activities, crafts, and stories when things don’t work out as planned. This requires a strong use of imagination and creativity.
