L’Chaim – A Taste of Chanukah Music from Israel

The fifth program of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale’s monthly series, L’Chaim – A Taste of Jewish Music from – Anywhere! will be held Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, 7:30 pm, the 5th night of Chanukah. Attendees will treated to a unique taste of Chanukah music from Israel by Leah Peer, founder and director of the Chorale’s women’s choir, Kol Nashim.

Leah Peer, founder and director of the Chorale’s women’s choir, Kol Nashim

Leah spent most of her formative years in Israel. She holds an M. Mus degree in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and a B.Mus in piano performance from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. She has been an active performing pianist for nearly forty years. She also established a choral and general music program at the Kadimah School of Buffalo, NY and served as assistant director with Amherst Bel Canto select choirs.

Leah has sung with the Colorado Hebrew Chorale since 2007 and has served on its board since 2008. She founded Kol Nashim in October 2013, with the support of the CHC board of Directors. Since its inception, Kol Nashim has embraced issues surrounding victims of domestic violence. Its women’s voices sing out to raise awareness and funds for those affected both locally and in Israel.

Under Leah’ direction, Kol Nashim performed at the 2019 North American Jewish Choral Festival in Stamford, CT. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Leah has initiated two musical series: “Fabulous Fiery Females” and “Marvelous Musical Men” to showcase the best Israeli musical artists. Members of Kol Nashim are currently rehearsing online to produce a virtual performance for “Sing Out for SafeHouse” in March 2021.

Participants in L’Chaim-A Taste of Chanukah Music from Israel! will be provided texts to enable singing along with Leah. They will also receive recipes for pannetone and sufganiot. While the L’Chaim! programs are free and open to the public, registration is required. Registration includes all events in the series.

Support for L’Chaim! has been provided by SCFD (the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District), Colorado Creative Industries, Union Pacific Foundation and the Bain Family Foundation, the Center Family Foundation, and the City and County of Denver.
