A Lunch and Learn Program
Presented by ACE at the Boulder JCC
Thursday, September 3, 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Join local, internationally-known photographer Bruce Shaffer as he guides us through images that are quirky and complex, comforting and disturbing, stark, and beautiful. They reflect his wanderings and work, far off the tourist trail.
Much of his photography looks at life in the margins, primarily in Israel and the West Bank / Palestine. He tells us, “I’m seeking the inexplicable expressions, gestures, and postures that penetrate the surface, to what’s really happening and how it feels.”
We hope that you will take the time to look at examples of his work on his website. We believe that you’ll find them intriguing and provocative. What’s going on here? Why did he photograph this scene? —questions that you’ll want to ask the artist directly at this program.
About Bruce Shaffer: Veteran Boulderite Bruce Shaffer began photographing Israel and the West Bank / Palestine in 1999, and has been living in Jerusalem half-time since 2013. Bruce leads ongoing photography workshops for mixed groups of Israeli and Palestinian youth. His work has appeared in Ha’aretz, The Times of Israel, The Forward, The Third Way film, and he photographs for regional NGOs such as Roots/Shorashim/Judur, Tiyul-Rihla, Women Wage Peace, Machsom Watch, Taghyeer, and Pashut Ahava.
