Are We Ready for Genetically Modified Humans? Dr. Jamie Metzl To Speak at Boulder JCC

The future has always been both simultaneously exciting and scary. The medical and technological advances in gene editing make anything seem possible, but it also raises many ethical questions. Can we eliminate diseases? Will scientists be able to create designer children with the traits their parents want? Technology may prevent suffering in future generations but how can we prevent companies and governments from taking the technology too far? On March 2nd, Dr. Jamie Metzl will answer the question: are we ready for genetically modified humans?

In his latest book, “Hacking Darwin,” Dr. Jamie Metzl reveals how we are on the brink of incredible new science where the power to eliminate diseases, enhance our children, and rewrite the code of life will shake the core foundations of what it means to be human. Metzl will explain how the choices we make today will be the difference between realizing breathtaking advances in human well-being and descending into a dangerous genetic arms race. Are we ready for this fast-approaching future? His vast research will be your guide to what’s happening, what’s at stake, and what we each and all must do now to prepare.

Jamie Metzl is a technology and healthcare futurist and geopolitical expert, and Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council. In February 2019, he was appointed to the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing.

Jamie Metzl will discuss “Hacking Darwin at the Boulder JCC on Monday, March 2 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the “Reflective Nature” Art Exhibit Opening Reception with Angela Beloian and Cara Enteles starting at 5:30 pm for drinks and refreshments before the author talk.
