Bonai Shalom is offering a number of exciting adult Hebrew learning opportunities that meet people where they are at: from true beginners to folks with a command of Hebrew that are ready for the next step in their learning. These classes are taught by Bonai Shalom’s Educational Director, Esther Benari-Altmann. A native Israeli, she is the recipient of the Grinspoon Award in Excellence in Jewish Education. This is an amazing opportunity to advance your Hebrew and Jewish learning in a friendly and loving environment.
On Tuesdays from 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Beginner Hebrew meets. Have you been wanting to start your Hebrew learning process, but feel scared to get started? Or has cost been prohibitive? Bonai Shalom is offering an intensive Hebrew learning experience for folks that are starting at the very first step. There is no cost for members and non-members pay $72 for the entire course. (Please contact us if this cost is prohibitive). This class is designed for students who have little to no background in Hebrew. This class introduces the Hebrew alef-bet and vowels and works on reading skills.
On Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm, Bonai is offering an Adult B’nai Mitzvah class. This is a class for adults who did not have the opportunity to have a bar/bat/bet* Mitzvah at 13. This class is open to students with a wide range of levels. What all students will have in common is a desire to deepen their Jewish learning in a variety of ways: Jewish calendar familiarity, Torah reading skills, crafting a sermon, leading a service, to name a few. The class will culminate in the B’nai Mitzvah class leading their own Saturday morning service. If you are looking to take the first steps on your path to living the Jewish calendar, this class is for you. If you are looking to take the first steps to Hebrew reading and comprehension in prayer and ritual, this class is for you. If you have a facility with Hebrew, yet yearn for more ritual knowledge, or to hone your Torah reading skills, this class is for you. Students will be given work that properly challenges them, based on their needs. Member fee is $180 and non-member fee is $250. Again, we do not want cost to be a barrier, so please contact the office if it is prohibitive. Classes start this Wednesday, 11/6.
On Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 pm, Conversational Hebrew is offered. This course helps students arrive at a fundamental understanding of Modern Hebrew. This class is for students who know how to read Hebrew. This class is great for people that want to be ready for a trip to Israel, including the community-wide trip this summer! You will learn the language skills necessary for basic conversation, buying things at a store or ordering at a restaurant in Israel. Classes start this Thursday, 11/7. There is no cost for members and non-members pay $72 for the entire course.
*bet is the nonbinary term for “child of,” from the Nonbinary Hebrew Project.
