DENVER, Colo.—JEWISHcolorado is hosting the second Community-wide Pink Shabbat® for Colorado on October 16th and 17th, as part of breast and ovarian cancer awareness month. More than 25 organizations and synagogues are currently participating, including four outside of the Denver/Boulder metro area. Events will include speakers, informational materials, special Oneg Shabbat festivities, and more. Last year’s inaugural Community-wide Pink Shabbat was the largest event of its size held in the United States.
Community-wide Pink Shabbat is an initiative of Sharsheret Supports™ JEWISHcolorado. Sharsheret Supports™ JEWISHcolorado is a collaboration between Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting Jewish women and their families facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer, and JEWISHcolorado to raise awareness and provide resources to community members. This year, the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the University of Colorado Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program are co-sponsoring Community-wide Pink Shabbat.
One in 40 Ashkenazi Jews carries a BRCA gene mutation, which increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers ten times the rate of the general population. Both men and women can carry a BRCA gene mutation and have a 50% chance of passing it along to their children.
