Yom Kippur is an awesome day (It is the last of the days of Awe – so truly it is an Awesome day.) For such an awesome day it is good to prepare to put oneself in the right mindset for Yom Kippur.
Among the customs that are part of this preparation is immersion in a Mikvah. A mikvah is a body of water that has the special power to transform a person from a state of spiritual impurity to a state of spiritual purity. It also is connected with the concept of rebirth – when you immerse in a mikvah you are surrounded by water on all sides similar to the time in the womb. Leaving the mikvah one returns to the world of air and space.
Since Yom Kippur is a time of return and spiritual new beginnings the mikvah is an ideal way to prepare for Yom Kippur, for both men and women of all ages.
In support of the community being able to observe this custom, the Boulder Mikvah has hours for men and for women.
The hours on Erev Yom Kippur, Friday September 13. are as follows:
Women’s Erev Yom Kippur hours: 8-10 am
Men’s Erev Yom Kippur hours: 12:30-1:30 pm.
