Elders to Commemorate Israel by Sharing Stories and Culture Sunday

SODmastheadIn honor of Israel Independence Day, the Congregation Har HaShem Star of David Program for older adults will present a panel on Sunday, April 21st from 2:00 -4:00 pm titled “Commemorating Israel: Sharing Stories and Culture.”

The panel will be moderated by Ellen Taxman and include voices about Israel from a spectrum of time periods including the present. Voices will include:

George Lichter was one of a handful of former WWII pilots, mostly from the United States, who volunteered to fight for Israel in the 1948 War of Independence.

Arnold Fridland grew up in an orphanage in Antwerp after the war and then emigrated to Israel in 1949 where he lived in the youth village Kfar HaNoar Nitzanim, situated in southern Israel near Ashkelon.

Eti Young was born in Riga, Latvia and emigrated to Israel in 1957 via Poland and detention in DP camps. She was educated in Israel, served in the military following the Six-Day War, and later worked as a flight attendant for EL-AL Airlines.

Lana Bernhardt lived in Israel from 1970-2001, with intermittent periods in the U.S. She spent most of her life on the Lebanese border on a Kibbutz including during the Yom Kippur War, the invasion of Lebanon, terrorist attacks, Scud attacks of Iran, and constant warring with Gaza.

There will also be a short movie clip shown and time for sharing personal stories about living in or visiting Israel.

The Star of David Program at Congregation Har HaShem is dedicated to providing older adults – of all ages – with a broad spectrum of activities and compelling topics that are practical, personal, and provocative in a welcoming environment that encourages building relationships.

Congregation Har HaShem is located at 3950 Baseline Road in Boulder. This program will be held in the main building in the first floor school wing.
