Unlike Chanukah and Passover, the one day Jewish holiday of Purim typically doesn’t get much attention.
To highlight the holiday, Chabad of NW Metro Denver – a Westminster Jewish outreach organization – has given it a twist and will present Purim in the Wild West!
The event will take place on Thursday March 8th from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the City Park Recreation Center in Westminster.
The highlight of the program will be a performance by local country singing star Matt Buckstein. Matt, who regularly plays at the Grizzly Rose, will perform his Country favorites and Western songs with a Purim twist. (Hear an example in the YouTube video below).
Rabbi Benjy Brackman executive director of Chabad of NW Metro Denver is really excited for the event:
Having Matt perform at our event will be a real treat and certainly add to our Western theme” says the rabbi “to boot, Matt is Jewish and has the Hebrew name Mordechai one of the heroes of the story of Purim! What a plot!”
The event will also include a Mechanical Bull, Western themed arts and crafts, and a buffet dinner that Billy the Kid would be proud of.
The story of Purim – how the Jews of Shushan in ancient Persia were saved from the Haman’s evil plot of annihilation – will be read at 5:30 pm from a traditional parchment scroll. The reading will be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation illustrating the story with animated pictures.
To add to the festivities and in accordance of the Purim custom guests are encouraged to come in Western-themed fancy dress or costume of choice.
Entrance fee is $8 child (2-12) and $13 adult and includes unlimited rides on the mechanical bull, buffet dinner and all activities. There is a family max of $45. Families with children 4 and under can find discounts at www.mazeltot.org.
