For Mah Jongg Lovers: A Must Read!

Yes, there’s a game on Tuesday 12/1, at Glacier Ice Cream on Baseline just west of Foothills, 7 pm. All are welcome. Might be the last game night for a few weeks due to Chanukah, finals week, holiday concerts, and the other madness of December.

The “Must Read” is this fun piece by Hadara Graubart on Tablet: (click the title below to read the full article, it’s a hoot)

Game Face:  A visit to the ladies who determine the dos and don’ts of mah  jongg.

“…a new generation of devotees is coming face to face with the National Mah Jongg League, the game’s notorious gatekeepers, alternately known as the “mah jongg mafia” and the “mah jongg police.”

And don’t forget the upcoming film:

Mah-Jongg: The Tiles That Bind

Mah-Jongg is more than a game – it’s a way of life! This light-hearted yet deeply moving portrait of the Asian-American and Jewish-American women who play this centuries-old Chinese game sheds light on the experiences of the players that simultaneously define and transcend cultural boundaries. Along the way, it proves again and again to be a bridge connecting seemingly unlike individuals, spanning generations, continents and cultures, and transcending classification as merely a game.  For Older Adults – Not Just for Seniors.

Film directed by Bari Pearlman and Phyliss Heller.  Thursday, December 10, noon at the Boulder JCC, 3800 Kalmia. $8 for film and lunch.
