Camp Gan Israel implements comprehensive sustainable practices this year - learn the how and why.

CGI Campers at the Denver Zoo summer 2011

Exciting Sustainable Curriculum Comes to Colorado’s Trendsetting Jewish Day Camp

Camp Gan Israel of the Rockies (CGI), the premiere Jewish day camp in Colorado, is going green, with comprehensive sustainable practices being implemented throughout its innovative summer programming. The camp, which serves ages 2.5 through 13 years old, will take place from June 25-July 27, 2012, at the state-of-the-art Ryan Elementary School in Lafayette, Colorado.

Camp Gan Israel of the Rockies is a joint project of Chabad of Longmont and Chabad of NW Metro Denver serving children from Boulder County and beyond, and is part of the largest and fastest growing network of Jewish day camps in the world. Gan Israel enjoys a well-earned reputation as a trendsetter with innovative ideas, creative programs, and new activities. But the true magic of the camp lives in the the comprehensive program designed to expose children to the richness of their Jewish heritage with highly qualified and caring staff, exciting programs, and cultural tradition. The camp has three different age divisions: Mini Gan Izzy (ages 3-4), Sabras (5-9), and Pioneers (10-13).

Introducing recycling to camp will nicely complement our curriculum of Jewish values and holidays,” says Leah Brackman, co-director of CGI Rockies, and despite the extra work and cost involved, it will be well worth the effort.

The decision to “go green” emerged out of Chabad Jewish Center of Longmont’s recent participation in Hazon’s Sustainable Audit program, which the center conducted over the last year. The audit included an overall assessment of the center’s current sustainable practices, as well as new initiatives for education and green practices that have been enthusiastically embraced by the community. At the recent Purim celebration, recycling and composting bins were prevalent, as well as traditional Mishloach Manot, or Purim goody bags prepared for friends and family, made out of recycled material.

For the 2012 camp season, CGI has committed to extending the green effort into the day-to-day operations of the camp, which provides healthy, kosher lunches and snacks, as well as branded water canteens. In addition, sustainability will be woven into the camp curriculum, as CGI of the Rockies believe that it is every member of a community, from the youngest to the oldest, can participate in environmentally-friendly practices. Lastly, the camp will be offering bus to and from key locations to help families with the high price of gasoline, as well as to lower the camp’s carbon footprint throughout Boulder County.

Fall Jewish Learning Institute Class in NW Metro Denver

A provocative new series of classes on the secrets of successful marriage will begin on Thursday May 3. Regardless of marital status, all are invited to attend the six-session course, presented and taught by Rabbi Benjy Brackman the spiritual leader of Chabad of NW Metro Denver a Jewish outreach group located in Westminster.

The course is a product of the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) an adult learning experience that offers its courses in hundreds of locations across the US.

The Art of Marriage will go far beyond platitudes, to cover topics at the heart of modern marriage. Does marriage still serve any purpose at all? How far should one go to make a marriage work? When is divorce the best option?

Included as well are Jewish bedroom secrets, from ancient texts, on how to increase intimacy in marital relationships.

“Beautiful, inspiring, but most of all practical,” says Dr. Patricia Love, author of How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, one of Amazon’s top two marriage books. “Whether your marriage is magical or miserable, this vital course is designed for you.”

Judaism views a loving marriage as a spiritual as well as a human ideal. The Art of Marriage shows students how to attain that for themselves and for their spouses, with timeless lessons from both modern and ancient Jewish texts such as the Talmud and Zohar (the central Kabalistic text).

Judaism venerates marriage and therefore has a long history of looking to enhance the marriage experience. The course is not only about providing techniques for success in marriage, it’s about changing your attitude toward your spouse and toward marriage in general,” explains Rabbi Benjy Brackman.

Like all JLI programs, The Art of Marriage is designed to appeal to students at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship.

Interested students may call 720-984-5805, or visit www.myJLI.com for registration and other course-related information. JLI courses are presented in Westminster in conjunction with Chabad of NW Metro Denver.

The Jewish Business Group (JBG) is proud to present its upcoming breakfast meeting with guest speaker Mr. Steve Bigari. Mr. Bigari is CEO of Stellar Restaurant Solutions, a leading provider of remote ordering services for restaurant take-out and delivery orders. The meeting will take place on Friday April 27 from 7:30 am – 9:00 am at the SpringHill Suites in Westminster, just two blocks southwest of the Boulder Turnpike on Church Ranch Blvd.

Prior to launching Stellar, Mr. Bigari owned and operated 12 McDonald’s restaurants and served as the innovation chairman at McDonald’s. Mr. Bigari has also founded America’s Family to provide low-income families with access to capital, financial education, and financial coaching relationships to help move individuals out of working poverty. As a result, he was inducted as an Ashoka Fellow in 2004.

Mr. Ed Rothschild, a local business owner and a regular attendee at the Jewish Business Group. thinks that Mr. Bigari’s message will resonate with many of the JBG attendees.

… people come to the JBG meetings to learn new business techniques and to be motivated in their line of business, and based on Steve’s experience and his upbeat messages I look forward to a very informative presentation,” said Mr. Rothschild.
