Jewish communities the world over are heading for the great outdoors this week in celebration of Lag B’Omer.

Jewish communities the world over are heading for the great outdoors this week, scheduling a host of barbeques, carnival games and bonfires in celebration of Lag B’Omer, the festival that marks the anniversary of the passing of the 2nd century sage Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

Beginning this year on Wednesday evening and continuing through Thursday, the festivities are in keeping with Bar Yochai’s instruction to celebrate the day as heralding the dissemination of the Torah’s esoteric teachings. One of the preeminent students of Rabbi Akiva, Bar Yochai authored the Kabbalistic source text known as the Zohar.

In Westminster Rabbi Benjy and Leah Brackman, co-directors of Chabad of NW Metro Denver, are getting ready for some golf and go karts. On Thursday afternoon May 10, they’ll be heading to Adventure Golf and Raceway in Westminster for a community Lag B’Omer barbeque and other outdoor activities.

They’ll be cooking up the usual fare – hot dogs, chicken wings and hamburgers – for the community, and will also be giving away Mother’s Day gifts to those who register ahead of the event.

Unlike other holidays, which have various ritual requirements, Lag B’Omer’s main focus is gathering Jews, especially children, for a day of pride and togetherness, explained Rabbi Benjy Brackman. “They’re just being Jewish, that may be the point. Just being Jewish, and being proud: That’s a big part of what Lag B’Omer is.”

After nearly a decade of Lag B’Omer events, including a bike ride last year, Brackman said he’s excited to try out the spot, which he has been driving by every day for years.

“It’s totally new venue for our programs,” he said. “We hope to engage people who perhaps would not be coming to a Torah class or Sabbath morning services.”

WHERE: Adventure Golf and Raceway – 9650 Sheridan Blvd Westminster, CO 80031

WHEN: Thursday May 10, 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm

COST: $10 per person – (covers bbq, a round of mini golf and go karts) $45 family maximum

RSVP @ www.COJewish.com or call 303.429.5177

Denver, April 12, 2012: The Mountain States Office of the Anti-Defamation League designated forty-five schools from across Colorado as No Place for Hate® after the schools completed a year-long effort to create equitable, safe and respectful environments. Schools from Denver, Aurora, Boulder, Fort Collins, Nederland, Greeley, Cherry Creek, Colorado Springs, and Durango attended the designation ceremony in Aurora on April 11.

It takes hard work to create an inclusive and respectful school community. “You just don’t open the window of your school and all the hate leaves,” said Manhattan Middle School principal Robyn Fernandez. “You have to be intentional and persistent in changing the culture of your school.” ADL honored Boulder’s Manhattan Middle School and Academy District 20’s Pine Creek High School with the Positive Impact! Award for their five-year commitment to the No Place for Hate® campaign.

Jamie Van Leeuwen, Governor Hickenloooper’s Senior Advisor and Director of Community Partnerships, read a proclamation from the Governor declaring April 11, 2012, “No Place for Hate® Day” in Colorado.

Bruce Caughey, Executive Director of the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), shared personal stories of challenges he experienced in his youth as it related to name-calling and bullying. He stressed the importance for administrators, teachers and faculty to take the time to create welcoming and safe climates on their campuses.

Teachers, administrators and ADL volunteers gathered at Aurora Public Schools Professional Learning Conference Center to celebrate achieving their goal of being designated No Place for Hate®. ADL presented each school with a designation banner to display in a prominent place.

The Mountain States Office of the Anti-Defamation League has offered the No Place for Hate® initiative to schools since 2007. This year’s program reached 41,000 students across Colorado.

The following schools earned banners recognizing their efforts in 2011-2012 No Place for Hate® campaign (Boulder Valley Schools are highlighted in bold):

Linda Newell and Rep. Sal Pace, and ADL Senior Associate Director Joyce Rubin look on as Governor Hickenlooper signs a new law to ensure that the state pupil enrollment count day will not be scheduled on a religious holiday.

DENVER: On March 22, 2012, Governor John Hickenlooper signed into law a bill that will ensure that the Colorado pupil enrollment count day does not conflict with religious holidays. Attending the signing ceremony were ADL Senior Associate Director Joyce Rubin and ADL Board Member Gary Rand.

Three times in the past few years, the October 1 count day has fallen on a major Jewish holiday. In 2006, the count day conflicted with Yom Kippur. In 2008 and 2011, it conflicted with Rosh Hashanah. The new law, sponsored by Representative Sal Pace and Senator Linda Newell, will move the count day to avoid such conflicts in the future.

Public schools count their students each fall and report their enrollment numbers to the state to determine the amount of state funding each school will receive.

School administrators commonly send letters home to families to encourage attendance on the count day. Parents are not usually informed that there is a mechanism in place to count students who are absent on the count day itself but who attend school in the days immediately before and after the count day. Rather, parents are strongly encouraged to avoid any absences on the count day.

In years when the count day fell on a holiday, Jewish parents who received such notices from their children’s schools often reacted with confusion and concern. They felt pressured to choose between religious observance and support of their children’s schools, and they were upset that a Jewish holiday was the day identified as the count day.

The only witness at the hearings on this bill was ADL Senior Associate Director Joyce Rubin. She explained to the legislators the importance of the holidays to Jewish parents and told the legislators about the many complaints ADL has received from parents in years when the count day conflicts with a holiday. The bill, which was also supported by the Jewish Community Relations Council, passed unanimously in both the House and the Senate.

March 11th phones across Colorado rang during Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado’s (Federation) annual phone-a-thon, Super Sunday. In addition to the traditional calling sessions, Federation offered a special bonus to the agency that closed the most donors during Super Sunday and Monday. This added incentive brought many local agencies and their devoted staff and volunteers out to the event and heightened the excitement in the room. It was with gusto and enthusiasm that the winner of this bonus, Denver Academy of Torah (DAT), closed 104 donors during the calling! Congratulations DAT!

The Denver Academy of Torah community is passionate about Jewish day school education and about Jewish community in general,” said Rachel Rabinovitch, President of Denver Academy of Torah. “We were thrilled to work together as a team on Super Sunday (and Super Monday) in support of the Allied Jewish Federation and the wider Jewish community! It was not only rewarding, but a lot of fun.”

<a href="http://boulderjewishnews.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/BBYO1.jpg" rel="lightbox[23537]" title="Bob and I loved making calls with the BBYO teens.
More than 40 teenagers from BBYO joined the calling in the afternoon on Sunday. Their enthusiasm was infectious and really got the room charged up. Robyn Loup, Co-Chair of Super Sunday said,

Bob and I loved making calls with the BBYO teens. It was such a joy with their positive energy, sincerity and fun attitudes! Super Sunday, as a whole, had great energy and was well executed by staff and lay leadership.”

In the evening, the young adults took over and during their “Smile and Dial Happy Hour,” made an incredible amount of phone calls and assisted the Federation to meet the goals. The different organizations, passionate about their fields, were able to put a human voice behind the work Federation supports.

There were over 230 volunteers present and many represented these agencies: BBYO, DAT, Kabbalah Experience, Jewish Experience Teens, Yeshiva Toras Chaim, Hillel of Colorado students, JConnect—Hebrew Educational Alliance, Chabad of Colorado, CAJE, Denver Jewish Day School, Robert E. Loup JCC, B’nai Akiva, Allied Jewish Senior Apartments, Anti-Defamation League, Stepping Stones, Keshet—GLBT, BMH-BJ, and Colorado Hebrew Chorale.

Overall, Super Sunday was able to raise over $250,000 from over 530 donors! But Federation is not stopping there. Federation staff and dedicated volunteers will continue to contact members of our community in the hope of ending the 2012 Annual Campaign on a high note.

Super Sunday is an incredible momentum builder in the middle of the campaign year,” said Amy Toltz-Miller, Federation’s Annual Campaign Chair. “We did amazing work around the JFNA General Assembly and now we are bringing the community back together to close the Campaign with flair.”

Federation is hoping to increase donations in the non-restricted/allocable category. The Flagship Fund is the cornerstone, enabling Federation to assist local agencies to complete their fundraising goals for critical community programs and services.

The purpose of the fund is to provide money to a distinctive group of women selected for their leadership abilities, to help them reach their potential, while encompassing the high ideals and genuine concern for others, which was the hallmark of Becky’s life” said Andrea Hyatt, one of the founders of the fund.

The Becky Topelson Women’s Scholarship Fund for leadership development is housed at the Jewish Community Foundation of Colorado.
