Esther suffered a massive stroke a couple of weeks ago, from which she never recovered. She was 87 years old. The funeral was this afternoon in Queens. Esther is survived by her three loving sisters,Valerie, Haichu and Irene, her son, three daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A family who are deeply connected and very strong in their Yiddishkeit.

Irene and her sisters were always known as the vier shwester, the four sisters, who all survived the Holocaust and remained together throughout the nightmare in the ghetto, three concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and a Displaced Persons’ camp; they were never separated during these unspeakable horrors. Until last night, all four sisters were still alive, and our hearts go out to Irene and the rest of the family on this very sad loss.

Irene will be sitting shiva from Sunday until Wednesday morning and the family have requested shiva calls only from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

There will be three shiva minyanim for ma’ariv on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm at Irene’s home.

Irene keeps a strictly Kosher home and has indicated to me that she is fine and does not want meals provided at this time, but people are encouraged to bring simple food like fruit and Kosher cake for the shiva home. Irene has specifically asked for nothing beyond this, but thanks everybody in advance for their love and support.

Originally from California, Nancy moved here after a career with the University of California and joined Congregation Bonai Shalom in 1998. Her friends shared that Nancy just loved Israel, that her love for Israel was extremely important to her and was probably one of the motivating factors to her late-in-life conversion to Judaism. Nancy was in a ladies brunch group made up of members from several different synagogues, and they visited her today just hours before she passed away. Nancy was very loved and will be missed.

The funeral will take place Sunday, January 1 at 10:00am graveside at Green Mountain Cemetery, 290 20th St. Boulder, CO.

Curt, Debbie and the family are very grateful for the outpouring of support at this time. May Kay’s soul be at peace and her memory a blessing. We wish Curt and the whole family great strength and comfort in their mourning.

The family is sitting a full shiva here in Boulder Thursday evening through Wednesday morning (see below).

It is our role as a community to take care of the mourners – the family should not be hosts, but rather we take care of them and one way of fulfilling the mitzvah of caring for the mourner is by volunteering in this capacity. Janine has been back east since Thursday and spent some time with her mother while she was still lucid. The funeral will be on Friday morning in Philadelphia, but Janine would like a memorial service back in Boulder with her community. We will keep you all informed.

My mom, Chana Devorah bat Chasya Fayge v’ David Jonah passed away before sunrise early this morning. She was a beautiful large-hearted soul who was much loved by all her three children and a favorite aunt to my cousins.”

Yisrael and Rochel built the mikvah for the entire Jewish community, and it is incumbent upon us as a community to help with shemira, the funeral, and to help his widow Rochel with food, comfort, and community at this tragic time for her.
