This will be Mark’s first performance at a Menorah lighting ceremony and he has put together quite an interactive Chanukah show including beatboxing shtick to the Maccabeats hit song Candle Light. Boulder Mayor Matt Applebaum did the blessing and lighting honors this year, assisted as always by Rabbi Pesach and Chany Scheiner of Chabad Lubavitch of Boulder County, the main organizers of the lighting ceremony.  The shamash was lit by Rochel Rosencranz in memory of her husband, Yisroel Rosencranz z”l, who passed away recently.

The event was also sponsored by Allied Jewish Federation, Boulder JCC, Boulder Jewish News, Oreg Foundation, and 18 Pomegranates with special thanks to Sally and Jim Kornberg, Bruce and Rhonda Wildman and Rabbi Popack for their support.

The suprisingly hardy crowd enjoyed a half-hour of Chanukah music provided by Steve Brodsky, risking guitar, microphone and health to play for the crowd, who sang and  clapped along to many Chanukah standards.

The fun begins at 3:30 pm with the menorah lighting ceremony at 5:00 pm. Event takes place at WinterSkate – 824 Front Street, downtown Louisville. Discounted admission if you mention you are there for Chanukah on Ice. Adults $3, Kids (4-12) $2, Children (ages 3- under) Free.  Skate rental $3.

The ice rink – open exclusively for Chanukah on Ice participants – will play a special mix of contemporary popular Chanukah music to invigorate the skaters with a Chanukah spirit.

Something like a Jewish version of Santa’s workshop, Chanukah Wonderland includes a variety of Chanukah crafts including an olive oil press demonstration that allows participants to hand-make olive oil just as the Jews did thousands of years ago when they lit the menorah in their temple in Jerusalem. Participants will then use the freshly made oil to light a menorah.

Other crafts include Chanukah cookie decorating, sand art, and face painting. Kids will even be able to dress up as their favorite Chanukah hero Judah the Macabee – who together with his brothers defeated the Greek invaders to Israel – and have their photo taken next to the giant 9-foot-tall menorah that sits in the mall.

“Chanukah wonderland is a great way for all kids to learn about the Jewish holiday of Chanukah in a fun and hands-on setting” says Rabbi Benjy Brackman who’s coordinating the event with his center, Chabad of NW Metro Denver.

The highlight of the afternoon will be the menorah lighting at 4 pm and will include Chanukah songs by singer Steve Brodsky and traditional Chanukah fare of hot latkas, donuts and chocolate coins.
