Michael Rosenzweig
The Boulder JCC recently received a grant from Roots and Branches, an initiative of Rose Community Foundation. The purpose of this grant is to create a lighthearted, innovative, friendly network of young Jews in Boulder who are interested in, and excited about, programming for the young, Jewish Boulder crowd. How are we going to do this, you might ask?
The way we plan on accomplishing this is for me to personally have conversations with 100 different people in this demographic. The goal of these conversations is to gather information about what people are truly looking for with regards to young adult programming within Boulder County. After speaking with outreach specialists, what I’ve learned is the best way to dive into such a broad topic is to have 1-on-1 conversations, to get to the core of what drives and inspires you. At the end of this project, I will develop a network map of Jewish Boulder, and with that knowledge, create a leadership team to plan a year’s worth of events that people are interested in and excited about.
I began working at the Boulder JCC this summer, and immediately fell in love with Boulder, and the vibrant Jewish community here. Having lived all over the country and holding jobs in numerous industries, I already feel like Boulder is home. On top of Boulder’s vivacious culture and all of the outdoor activities here, Jewish life is energetic, adaptive, and welcoming to all .
So now that you know a little bit about this project and me, here’s where you come in: if you are a Boulder Jew between the ages of 25-35, give me a shout. I would love to take you out for coffee and talk about where you came from, where you are headed, and what you are looking for in terms of programming for young, Jewish Boulder. If you know someone that fits this age group, feel free to send them my information or shoot me a line with theirs.
I look forward to better getting to know those of you whom I already know, meeting more amazing young Jews here, and ensuring that young adult programming in Boulder is relevant, stimulating, and well attended for years to come! Follow along with this project as I’ll be blogging weekly about these conversations, right here on the Boulder Jewish News.

Jeffrey Goldberg, Har Hashem Scholar-in-Residence May 18th and May 20th.
Congregation Har HaShem, Boulder’s Reform Jewish congregation, will host nationally recognized journalist and blogger Jeffrey Goldberg for two presentations on Israel as Scholar in Residence May 18th and May 20th.
“It is not every day that a journalist of national prominence comes to Boulder to talk about some of the most important issues facing American Jewry and Israel,” said Congregation Har HaShem Senior Rabbi Joshua Rose.
Jeffrey Goldberg is national correspondent for Atlantic Magazine and columnist for Bloomberg. A leading expert on Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism, Goldberg is well known for his appearances on shows such as the Colbert Report, Meet the Press and NPR. He has been named twice to the “Forward 50” and is a recipient of the National Magazine Award for Reporting. He was named by a Columbia Journalism Review editor as the most influential journalist/blogger on matters related to Israel. In addition to his writing and speaking about Israel, Jeffrey Goldberg was one of four writers invited to write commentaries in Jonathan Safran Foer’s and Nathan Englander’s newly released New American Haggadah.
I started reading Jeffrey Goldberg’s work because I was tired of the black and white simplicity of the debate on Israel. His writing and thinking recognizes the complexity of Israel’s situation in a way that so much writing from the left and from the right does not. It is so important that Jewish discourse about Israel avoid naiveté and complacency. It was refreshing to have a journalist challenge conventional wisdom in such an interesting way,” said Rabbi Rose.
On Friday, May 18th at 6:00 pm, a special dinner and presentation, “Do American Jews Still Care about Israel,” will follow Shabbat services at Congregation Har HaShem, 3950 Baseline Road in Boulder. Mr. Goldberg will discuss changes in the American Jewish attitude toward Israel, challenge conventional wisdom about the meaning of these changes, and reflect on the implications of the new American Jewish relationship for Israel’s future. He will be joined for part of the discussion by Rabbi Rose.
On Sunday, May 20th at 10:30 am, Jeffrey Goldberg will be joined by Congressman Jared Polis to address “A Coming Conflict or a War of Words? Israel, Obama and Iran’s Nuclear Program.” The situation between Israel and Iran is one of the most potent in Israel’s history. Jeffrey Goldberg’s access at the highest levels of the Israeli and American governments have made him a go-to source for understanding this tricky three-way relationship. The language from Netanyahu has been bellicose, Iran’s tone dangerous, and the stakes enormously high. In addition to its potential danger to the Jewish state, the Iran situation poses difficult challenges for the United States as it navigates the complex challenges of how to use its power in the region, and how to navigate its changing relationship with Israel.
RSVPs are required for both events. Seating is limited for May 18th dinner. The cost is $12. Kids 13 and older are encouraged to attend. RSVP online at www.harhashem.org. Suggested donation for May 20th is $10 which will help build the Scholar-in-Residence Fund. For information, contact (303) 499-7077.

Beginning May 29th and concluding August 10th, Boulder JCC campers can participate in numerous one-week experiences. From cultural arts, to leadership, to gardening, to sports to science and Lego, the Boulder JCC’s specialty camp program has something for everyone!
Last year, the Boulder JCC ran six camps, according to Shalom Family & Camp Director Shari Blake Schnee. This year, the schedule includes over 20 options for one-week camps for children ages 5-12. The Boulder JCC also offers a preschool camp from June 4-August 3rd for 18-month to 5 year-olds.
Most of the camps are located at the Boulder JCC (3800 Kalmia Ave in Boulder) and include half-day and full-day options (most weeks). For those campers electing to stay a full day, a supervised lunch is available. Additionally, all of our camps are staffed by certified and trained professionals. These diverse camp offerings will build your child’s skills and interests in a safe and nurturing environment. Most importantly, all of our camps provide the kind of fun and excitement both you and your child want for the summertime!
As one of last year’s parents explained, for her daughter, camp was a great extension of the Boulder JCC preschool experience. She shared that her child is a
painfully shy student, [and]
…she was successful at camp because on the first day, she realized that she knew the majority of campers from preschool. This helped her ease into her new surroundings because she immediately felt that she belonged. I explained to my daughter that this is what it means to be part of the Boulder Jewish community.
The Boulder JCC is pleased to involve so many incredible local partners in this year’s specialty summer camp schedule. One such camp is the Girls Leadership Institute, being offered to incoming 5th and 6th grade girls. From June 4-8th, participants will deepen their emotional intelligence, learn about healthy relationships and practice methods for direct communication and conflict resolution. This camp teaches campers these invaluable skills through theatre games, crafts, sports and small group discussions.
Camps are filling fast so don’t delay! Register your camper today at www.boulderjcc.org. Please contact Shari Blake Schnee at (303-998-1900 x 106) or via email (shari@boulderjcc.org) with any questions.

On Friday, May 18, from 6-8 pm, the Boulder JCC will host its third annual Shabbat in the Park in Superior for families with children of all ages. This year the theme is “Celebrating Israel” and we will eat and dance Israeli style under open skies at the Purple Park Shelter, 1310 S. Pitkin Ave in Rock Creek, Superior.
To usher in Shabbat, we’ll gather as a community to light candles and say hamotzi (the blessing over the challah bread) together. Grape juice and challah will be provided. The evening will continue with a catered meal from Falafel King, Israeli dancing and crafts for the children.
Shabbat in the Park is a great family-friendly way to celebrate Shabbat with your neighbors. The Boulder JCC has held these events in Nederland, Longmont, Superior and Erie. Superior resident, Rina Tilzer shared, “My husband and I both grew up in families that were active in the Jewish community. We are hoping to pass on a strong Jewish identity to our children by being active in the community ourselves. By sending our children to the Boulder JCC Preschool along with attending JCC events throughout the year we hope to lay a strong Jewish foundation. The neighborhood shabbat dinners are a great way for us to get to know other Jewish families in our immediate neighborhood.”
To attend, please register at www.boulderjcc.org by Monday, May 14. The cost is $8 per adult; $5 per child (2 and up). This program qualifies for a MazelTot discount. This program has been made possible through a grant from Rose Community Foundation.

Meghan Zibby comes to CU from Windsor, CO and is a senior majoring in Religious Studies and Anthropology with a Jewish Studies certificate. She will be continuing her education with CU, earning her Masters within the Religious Studies department. Her research will be focused on Crypto-Judaism during the time of the Inquisition. After her Masters, Meghan seeks to earn a PhD and eventually teach. Meghan is a coffee addict and in her free time loves to read and garden.
1. What organization are you interning for and what do you do for it?
I am an intern with the CU Archives, and I work specifically on the Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi collection which was donated to the university last year. My work primarily focuses on the inventory of materials in order to start to gain intellectual control over this very large collection.
2. What did you learn most, this semester, from your internship?
I have been able to learn a lot about how the archives and the library as a whole function. I have been learning how to convert the inventories we currently have into metadata so that the collection can eventually be available online. Also, I work directly with Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi’s materials, so I have been able to learn a lot about him as well as the Jewish Renewal community.
3. What do you hope to do with what you learned from you internship in the future?
I eventually want to earn my PhD within religious studies which will obviously take a lot of research. Being an intern at the archives has taught me not only how to deal with priceless, one-of-a-kind materials but also the “curating” process that goes into processing a collection.
4. What is your favorite part about the Jewish Studies program?
The Jewish Studies program has become a real home for me over the past couple of years. As much as I have enjoyed all of my classes and the amazing opportunities that the program has provided, I would have to say that my favorite part of the Jewish Studies program is the friends that I have made amongst the faculty and my fellow students.
5. What’s your favorite flavor of Pringles?
Mmm, BBQ!

Jewish communities the world over are heading for the great outdoors this week, scheduling a host of barbeques, carnival games and bonfires in celebration of Lag B’Omer, the festival that marks the anniversary of the passing of the 2nd century sage Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.
Beginning this year on Wednesday evening and continuing through Thursday, the festivities are in keeping with Bar Yochai’s instruction to celebrate the day as heralding the dissemination of the Torah’s esoteric teachings. One of the preeminent students of Rabbi Akiva, Bar Yochai authored the Kabbalistic source text known as the Zohar.
In Westminster Rabbi Benjy and Leah Brackman, co-directors of Chabad of NW Metro Denver, are getting ready for some golf and go karts. On Thursday afternoon May 10, they’ll be heading to Adventure Golf and Raceway in Westminster for a community Lag B’Omer barbeque and other outdoor activities.
They’ll be cooking up the usual fare – hot dogs, chicken wings and hamburgers – for the community, and will also be giving away Mother’s Day gifts to those who register ahead of the event.
Unlike other holidays, which have various ritual requirements, Lag B’Omer’s main focus is gathering Jews, especially children, for a day of pride and togetherness, explained Rabbi Benjy Brackman. “They’re just being Jewish, that may be the point. Just being Jewish, and being proud: That’s a big part of what Lag B’Omer is.”
After nearly a decade of Lag B’Omer events, including a bike ride last year, Brackman said he’s excited to try out the spot, which he has been driving by every day for years.
“It’s totally new venue for our programs,” he said. “We hope to engage people who perhaps would not be coming to a Torah class or Sabbath morning services.”
WHERE: Adventure Golf and Raceway – 9650 Sheridan Blvd Westminster, CO 80031
WHEN: Thursday May 10, 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm
COST: $10 per person – (covers bbq, a round of mini golf and go karts) $45 family maximum
