The Denver-based Jewish Community Relations Council issued their position opposing certain measures on this fall's mid-term elections ballot.

Jewish Community Relations Council Opposes Amendments 60, 61 and 62; Proposition 101

(October 15, 2010)— Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) voted unanimously to oppose Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61; and Amendment 62.

Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61
JCRC is concerned about the impact these three economic measures will have on our ability to educate children, provide funding for public infrastructure, recruit and retain businesses and jobs in our community and the State of Colorado. The passage of these ballot initiatives will hinder all public services across the state.

Proposition 101 jeopardizes state and local governments’ ability to provide basic public services and meet growing infrastructure needs.

Amendment 60 amends the state constitution to severely restrict local control of local budgets.

Amendment 61 amends the state constitution to limit or eliminate state and local governments’ ability to access sound and reliable means of public financing.

Current statewide estimates show the potential for the loss of over 70,000 jobs if Prop 101, Amendment 60 and 61 pass. This would be on top of the 100,000 jobs that Colorado has lost in the 2008/2009 recession.

The proposed measures will put unnecessary constraints on the State of Colorado,” said JCRC Chair, Rick Kornfeld. “Specifically, these measures will negatively impact public education, job creation, current and future small business growth and development, public infrastructure, and, ultimately grow our deficit. In light of these issues, JCRC cannot support any of these measures as they are not good for our community or the State.”

Amendment 62-The Personhood Amendment
The JCRC opposes this amendment because it places religion in the state Constitution, imposing one religious belief over all others, and not all would agree with the way it defines “person” as being “from the beginning of biological development.” It would ban all abortion, even for victims of rape and incest or when a women’s life is at risk. It has other far-reaching consequences, affecting thousands of laws – from when property rights are granted to inheritance rights and who can file a lawsuit.

About Jewish Community Relations Council
The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), is a coalition of about three dozen Jewish agencies, organizations, day schools, and synagogues located across the Denver/Boulder metropolitan area that have come together to speak with one representative voice on issues of concern to the local and global Jewish community. JCRC has been called “the consensus voice for policy and advocacy for the organized Jewish community of Colorado.”

Bonai Shalom members would love to have your help preparing, serving food and cleaning up at Community Table. There is a special need for March 8th.

On Monday, March 8th, Bonai Shalom members would love to have your help preparing, serving food and cleaning up at Community Table. There is a special need for March 8th, because the group with whom we partner–Cisco–is going to be short-handed–especially for the second shift. Meals are served from 5 to 6 pm, with overlapping shifts, 3:45 to 5:15, and 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Come for what time you can give.

New Location. Community Table is now at The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) on the northeast corner of 14th St. and Spruce St., one block north of the Pearl St. Mall, south of Pine. The entrance to the community hall is mid-block between 14th St. and 15th St to the east. The entrance is towards the alley on the north side of the church, and can also be accessed from Spruce. The church is caddi-corner from the Boulder city building in the center of the mall, north of the Boulder Art Theater on 14th, south of Lucille’s restaurant on 14th, across from the Buddist Shambhala Building on the west.

Parking. The church has a parking lot north of the alley on 15th St. This is available after 5 P.M. Most signs indicate reserved or leased spaces. This is until 5 P.M., I’m told. There are free spots on Pine St., and some on 15th. Most of the parking on the city streets in this area are “fee” or metered spaces. Please be aware of the signs on the streets, and the pay kiosks. Please consider extra time to find a spot, and don’t get too frustrated.

One-way streets. The church is at the corner of the Pearl Street Mall circular traffic pattern. This means that between Walnut to the south and Spruce to the north, from 15th to the west and 10th to the east traffic flows in a counter-clockwise pattern. Spruce St. is one way to the west (Broadway) from 14th. 14th is one-way south from Pine to Walnut. Pine is two ways, as is Spruce from 14th east. 15th is two ways from Pine to Spruce, but one-way north between Walnut/Pearl/Spruce. Confused? From Broadway (12th) take Pine. From the east use Pine or Spruce.

The Carriage House Community Table provides a safe, supportive community for the homeless and working poor. We are committed to addressing their immediate survival needs and to providing services that lead to stability, healing and employment. We provide a wide variety of services both at the Carriage House and at the free dinners we host at local churches in our community.

The Colorado State Senate holds a hearing on Monday, Feb 15th on a bill to establish "religious bills of rights" for students, parents, teachers and administrators.

Colorado State Senate Committee to Hold Hearing Monday on Bill

On Monday, February 15th, at 1:30 p.m., the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on SB10-089: Creation of Religious Bills of Rights for Individuals Connected to Public Schools. Last week, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) in Denver voted (unanimously) to oppose SB10-089.

This bill would require the Colorado State Board of Education to adopt a “religious bill of rights” for public school students and parents and a religious “bill of rights” for public school teachers and employees outlining each party’s respective “inalienable individual religious rights.” An example of one of the “inalienable rights” included in this bill is that a student would have the “right to express his or her religious beliefs on a public school campus or at a school-sponsored event to the same extent as he or she may express a personal secular viewpoint.” An example of a teacher’s “inalienable rights” is the right to not be required to teach a topic that violates his or her religious beliefs and not be disciplined for refusing to teach the topic.”

Here is a link to the full text of the bill.

The JCRC is sending a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee stating that the JCRC believes that the First Amendment adequately covers such issues and that this could potentially embroil the State in constitutional litigation that it can ill-afford at this time. The Anti Defamation League (ADL) is the lead organization at the hearing and will provide testimony in opposition of this bill. It is widely believed that there is not enough support in the Colorado legislature for this bill to pass. If the bill gets out of committee, the JCRC will be providing information regarding how to contact your state representatives and senators.
