The Talmud defines when night gives way to day, when Holy days come in and out. But the shift from Yom HaZikaron’s twilight mourning on Mt. Herzl to the Yom HaAtzmout’s evening awakening lacks a decisive moment. They are joined; two carefully choreographed days of a troupe in perpetual motion between grief and joy, success and frustration, scored to silence & celebration. Cemetery stillness finds chorus lines on Jaffa Street that swell to crashing raves in the shuk. Israel is never at rest. Nodding out on the #74 at 2:00a.m., a hand touched my knee and a voice asked: “Do you know where you are?”
