Circles of Goodness Amidst Chaos and Destruction

Rabbi Deborah Bronstein, of Congregation Har HaShem, will be speaking at Congregation Bonai Shalom on Friday, January 15. Rabbi Bronstein was instrumental in bringing Sudanese refugees to Boulder. In January, 2009, she traveled to Sister Louise’s compound in Juja, Kenya near Nairobi. Rabbi Bronstein chose to visit Sister Louise at the start of her sabbatical, both to learn from her as a living exemplar of a religious leader, devoting her life to putting faith into action, and also to thank her for blessing our community with the opportunity to work with the “Lost Girls.”

As the greatest need was to upgrade her clinic, the “thank you” came in the form of medical equipment and medications and most importantly a doctor and nurse who spent their time educating the nurse and nurse’s aide at the clinic and seeing patients. For Rabbi Bronstein, the visit turned out to be a clarifying experience which has allowed her to change the focus of her work at Congregation Har HaShem.

Rabbi Bronstein will speak about a few of the extraordinary acts of hesed, faithful love, that she witnessed while in Kenya and what they have to teach us about our own abilities and responsibilities. In the year since her journey, through her study of recent Sudanese and Kenyan history, the effect of trauma on refugees, the current issues facing the Southern Sudanese both here and especially in Sudan, she has come to understand more fully how wondrous the acts of goodness were and how important it is that we continue the work we began. This will be the focus of her presentation.

Shabbat Services begin at 6:00 pm; Rabbi Bronstein’s presentation begins at 8:00 pm and is open to all.  At Congregation Bonai Shalom, 1527 Cherryvale Road, Boulder.  (A dinner following services is only for those who have preregistered).
