Denver Rally Supports Jerusalem Mayor

Several dozen supporters of Israel gathered across the street from Gates Concert Hall at the University of Denver to show support for Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat who was speaking inside. Their stated purpose was: “Counter the Lies”, in response to accusations at a rally of anti-Israel groups across the street. The Colorado Palestine Solidarity Campaign had called for their demonstration because they are accusing the University of Denver and other governmental institutions of supporting “ethnic cleansing” of Arab Palestinians from Jerusalem by allowing Mayor Barkat to speak. They also accuse Mayor Barkat of being a war criminal.

The counter-demonstration was put together only the night before as four local groups supporting Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat responded to rumors that the anti-Israel groups would try to disrupt the talk by Mayor Barkat. Reports from inside Gates Hall said that disruptions did occur and one of the disrupters was removed by security for the event.

The four groups, Americans Against Terror, Stand With Us, Action Israel and Stand By Israel noted the Colorado Palestine Solidarity Campaign Website had called for the disruptions and such calls and actions were in line with disruptions at other pro-Israel events in other cities. They also noted that some of the rhetoric outside Gates Hall was directed at Jews and not Israel.

But outside, the two sides were peaceful and avoided confrontation.
